Duct Tape versus Gaffers Tape

While there is a wide variety of tapes in the Cloth Tape category, the most common are Gaffers Tape and the iconic Duct Tape.

Both are commonly used in applications requiring a strong, flexible, and very sticky tape. Cloth tapes are stretchable, conformable to uneven surfaces and are easy to tear by hand, making them easy to apply without the need for a dispenser or blade.  However, these tapes are often mistaken to be interchangeable.

Duct Tape

Duct Tape is cloth or scrim-backed tape that is typically coated with polyethylene, giving it a high gloss finish and waterproof performance. Duct tape is generally a silver-gray color, but is available in other colors and printed designs and patterns. This is because the cloth surface is easy to print on, and the tape is frequently used in high-visibility areas including marking surfaces.

Gaffers Tape

Gaffers Tape is similar to Duct Tape, except that it has a matte finish which does not reflect light. This makes it ideal for theaters, conference rooms and audio visual production. Because it doesn't reflect light, it is used to conceal cables, make repairs or temporarily hold items in place.

The most common color is black, but other muted colors such as gray or brown are also widely used.

Adhesive Bond

Adhesive bond is another key difference. The adhesive coating of Duct Tape is designed for semi-permanent or permanent applications and may leave behind a sticky residue upon removal. This makes it a good choice for  for making repairs, bundling heavy duty materials, sealing leaks and similar applications.

The adhesive on gaffer’s tape is less aggressive than that of Duct Tape, making it a good choice for temporary jobs. It can be removed cleanly without damage or adhesive residue.

Fun Facts about Cloth Tapes

The highly useful, general purpose cloth tape is the source of many fun facts.

Duct tape was also commonly referred to as "Duck" tape, due to the cotton duck cloth it was originally made from. Cotton duck is plain woven cotton fabric commonly seen in sneakers, tents or sandbags. Many believe the name came from its common use in HVAC duct work.

Although it was traditionally used in duct work for repair and joint-seaming, modern duct tape has largely been displaced by specialized foil tapes with UL or other certifications for heat and flammability.

In the audio-visual industry, a "gaffer" is the chief lighting technician, responsible for lighting, sound and the electrical service to both.

Modern lore holds that Duct Tape can be used to fix anything. Of course, that truly depends upon the application. Duct Tape is widely used in military, home repair, space flight and in 2003, was even cited by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security as a necessary part of every homeowner's disaster readiness kit in the event of biological, chemical, or radiological terrorist attack.
