Double Coated Tapes

versatile bonding solution for adhering two surfaces together

Double-coated tape, often referred to as Double-Sided or Double-Faced tape, is a versatile bonding solution for adhering two surfaces together. Double-coated tapes are fast, convenient, hassle-free, and less messy than other solutions such as glues, hot melt, or epoxy resins.

Because there is adhesive on both sides of the tape, there has to be a “carrier” or “middle layer” to deliver the adhesive. The carrier may be paper or tissue, a film such as mylar, or a foam for cushioning. The selection of a carrier becomes important as an end user might wish for the double-coated tape to have some stretch or other characteristic when it is applied.

The adhesive selection is also important since it is the bond between the surfaces. Often, the surfaces will be distinct, requiring differing adhesive systems on either side. Double-coated tapes generally are configurable, meaning that an end user can select a unique adhesive for each side. For instance, metal to wood may require a rubber-based adhesive on the wood side, with an acrylic adhesive on the metal side.

Advantages of Double-Coated Tapes

Convenience

Double-coated tapes are easy to use, requiring very little prep work for a good bond. There are no glue guns or special tools required. In most instances, these tapes can be torn by hand or clipped for easy application. Since the set time is usually immediate, there is no need for clamps or holding parts in place during bonding.

Seamless, Invisible Bond

Double-coated tapes provide a seamless bond with a high-quality, professional finish. Unlike mechanical fasteners such as screws or tacks, it is undetectable to the eye making it ideal for mounting in highly visible applications such as graphics, plate mounting and construction.

Versatility

Whether for temporary or permanent bonding, double-coated tapes are versatile. If surfaces are uneven, curved, or irregular, double-coated tapes offer even and consistent weight distribution across the surface of the tape. It is easy to combine uneven surfaces without distorting or damaging the product.

Double-coated tapes can replace staples, screws, nails, and tacks or glues, and is gentler on surfaces. With the addition of foam as a carrier, it has the added benefit of absorbing shock and vibration.
